Fencing Installation Overview
Before you commence
- Check council regulations regarding boundary fencing
- Before you dig, check for underground services (electrical, communications, plumbing)
- Identify your soil type; this will determine the concrete you need for post footings.
- Ensure you have the correct tools and components
Consider installation type
- If the ground is not level over the area of fence installation, the fence will need to be raked or stepped.
- Depending on the wind category of your region, the end/s will also need to be tapered over the past two panels

Frequently Asked Questions
COLORBOND® fencing performs exceptionally well in terms of durability, weather resistance, fire resistance, stylish design and colour options, ease of installation, visual privacy, and security. It is a cost-effective, sustainable, high-quality fencing material choice.
Choose COLORBOND® fence posts and rails to complete the look and ensure long-term performance for your COLORBOND® fence. They are superior in terms of low maintenance, high durability, rust-, rot-, and termite-resistance, and ability to withstand Australia’s harsh climate. The technology behind this steel fencing ensures that it is fade- and chip-resistant, reflects sunlight, and is sustainable and fully recyclable.
Holes for fence posts need to provide a secure and stable base for your fence. For a standard 1.8m high fence, COLORBOND® steel fence posts need to be installed at a depth of 600mm. This may vary depending on the fence height and specific ground/soil conditions. Roofmart can advise you on this.
Most COLORBOND® fences have fencing posts placed 2.4m apart to suit the standard width of panels and to optimise stability and strength. Check with Roofmart for manufacturer guidelines as well as your local council for any specific regulations that may apply to your fencing project.
COLORBOND® fencing rails are an important addition to your fence: they help support, stabilise, and strengthen the fence panels and optimise the performance and durability of your fence. They provide an essential structural framework to help keep the fencing sheets in place and complete the fence for a cohesive, appealing, “finished” look.
COLORBOND® steel fencing posts and rails are available in the same colour options as for the COLORBOND® fencing sheets to match and complement your overall fence aesthetic – explore here.
